Nitorgen
Nitorgen is a chemical element, its symbol is N,its atomic number is 7, and has an atomic number of 14.00674u. Nitrogens atomic radius is 71 pm, nitrogen gas is colourless, odorless and isconsidered as a knowble gas, nitrogen as a liquard is also colourless and odorless. It has a similar appearance to water, its melting point is -210 degrees C and its boling point is point is -195.75 degrees C. Nitrogen gas makes up 78.1% of the earths air.
Nitrogen was first discovered by chemist and physician Daniel Rutherford 1772. He conducted a test where he removed carbon dioxide and oxygen from the air and showed the residual gas could not support a living organisms. A group of scientists were working the problem of nitrogen, they called it burnt or 'dephlogisticated air' which means air without oxygen. The French chemist Antoine Lavoisier accedently named nitogen asote, meaning without life. Nitrogen co
mpounds are found in organic materials, foods, poisons, fertilizers and explosives.
Some nitrogen compounds are Sodium nitrate (NaNO3) and potassium nitrate (KNO3), these are formed by decomposing matter with these matals present. One of the most important processes of lfe is the nitrogen cycle. Even though nitrogen gas is relatively inert bacteria in the soil can 'fix' the nitrogen into a usable form of fertilizer for plants. Nitrogen is incorporated into plants that animals eat, the nitrogen in such provieds as protein for the animal. The cycle is completed when bacteria converts the waste nitrogen back into nitrogen gas. Nitrogen is a critical element to nature as it suports lifeas a component of all proteins. [1]
